Almonaster La Real

Sierra de Aracena village below a hilltop fortified mosque with broad countryside views.

A small village in the Sierra de Aracena, Almonaster la Real is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the area. It sits below a hill crowned by the Almonaster la Real Mosque — an ancient fortified mosque that, while less ornate than the Great Mosque in Córdoba, is remarkably complete. The building's history runs even deeper: it was previously a Visigothic Christian church, and some of its foundations are of Roman origin.

Directly beside the mosque stands a 19th-century bullring, still used for a single corrida each year. The combination of ancient mosque and rural bullring on the same hilltop is quietly extraordinary.

The village makes an excellent base for the Sierra. Several waymarked walking routes start here, and accommodation is available if you want to slow down and explore on foot.

Getting There

Almonaster la Real is in the Sierra de Aracena, about 100 kilometres northwest of Sevilla. By car, take the A-66 motorway north from Sevilla toward Zafra, then the N-435 west toward Huelva and follow local roads to Almonaster — the journey takes about 90 minutes.

There is a railway station at Almonaster-Cerro del Andévalo, on the Huelva–Zafra line, though services are infrequent (a few trains a day at best) and the station is not in the village itself. Most visitors arrive by car. Aracena, 18 kilometres east, is the main hub for the sierra and has better bus connections from Huelva and Sevilla.

Things to Do

The mosque on the hill is the reason most people come, and it can be seen in under an hour — but the walk up and the views justify arriving without hurrying. The village itself is compact and pleasant to wander: a cluster of whitewashed houses, a central plaza, and several walking routes that head into the surrounding sierra. The area is known for its ancient oak and cork forests, which shelter Iberian lynx and black storks.

Hikers use Almonaster as a base for the Sierra de Aracena. Waymarked trails connect the village to nearby towns, including a well-used route to Aracena. The countryside is quiet and the paths are well maintained.

When to Go

Almonaster la Real's most atmospheric time to visit is mid October, when the village hosts a four-day Islamic festival centred on the hilltop mosque and its tiny paseo. The streets fill with craft stalls, live music, and performances — a fitting celebration of the village's Moorish heritage.
