Cordoba's position on the AVE line makes it an easy base for the rest of Andalusia. Seville is 45 minutes west, Granada around two and a half hours east by road. Closer to home, the small white-washed villages of the Subbética — Priego de Córdoba, Zuheros, Iznájar — make a beautiful day's drive through olive country. The ruins of Medina Azahara, eight kilometres west of the city, are nominally a day trip too, though most people fold them into a half-day on a city break.
