Garganta Verde

A deep limestone gorge between the Sierra del Pinar and the road to Zahara, with sheer walls of pale rock and a stream that runs only in winter. The track from the road descends a steep 400 metres into the gorge, ending at a large cave at the bottom. The walk back up is unrelenting; allow three hours.

The whole route is permit-only and closed during the vulture nesting season (June to October). Most of Andalucía's largest griffon vulture colony lives in the cliffs overlooking the path — the birds nesting and circling at eye level when you stand on the lip of the gorge.
