Pinsapar

Rare Spanish fir forest hike in the Sierra de Grazalema

The Pinsapar is a protected forest of Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park — one of only two remaining stands of this ancient species, which once covered much of the western Mediterranean. The circular walk from Grazalema to Benamahoma through the forest is one of the finest hikes in Andalucia.

From the village, follow the road toward Zahara. A short distance out, a marked trail climbs steeply up the mountainside to the left, gaining the ridge before dropping into the fir forest on the far side. The pinsapos are striking trees — dark, conical, and unlike anything else in southern Spain. The descent into Benamahoma takes you through the heart of the forest, and the return along the road offers sweeping views across the sierra in the late afternoon light.

Because the forest is a protected area, visitor numbers are limited during peak season. Book a permit a few days ahead at the Park Office in Grazalema if you are visiting in summer. The walk is roughly 12 kilometres and takes four to five hours. Consider stopping at a bar in Benamahoma before heading back.
