The old town of Marbella is compact and walkable — pedestrian streets, small squares and a seafront promenade make a car a nuisance rather than a help. For travel along the coast, the A-7 runs right through everything from Málaga to Gibraltar; local buses connect Marbella to Puerto Banús, San Pedro, Fuengirola and the airport. Taxis are reasonable over short distances but expensive for longer trips. If you want to explore the mountain villages inland — Ojén, Istán, Ronda — hire a car.
