Vélez-Málaga Old Town

Moorish hilltop castle and old quarter just inland from the coast

The historic town of Vélez-Málaga, about four kilometres inland from Torre del Mar, is the capital of the Axarquía comarca and far older than its coastal neighbour. The Moorish castle on the hill above town dates from the 13th century and commands views over the coast and the Axarquía hills. The old quarter below has a 16th-century church built on the site of a mosque, and the weekly market draws the surrounding villages. A local bus runs between Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga.
