When to Go

July and August are peak season — hot (regularly above 30°C), busy, and expensive. June and September are better: warm enough for beach days, the sea has heated up by September, and the crowds thin noticeably. May and October are good for walking and sightseeing inland without the summer heat. Winters are mild (15–17°C) and sunny by northern European standards, and the town is almost entirely quiet; many beach restaurants close from November to March.

The Virgen del Carmen procession on 16 July is the town's most important festival — the statue of the patron of the sea is carried in a decorated boat along the coast, accompanied by fireworks and crowds on the beach. The Noche de San Juan on 23–24 June is celebrated with bonfires on the beach at midnight and people wading into the sea.
