El Tigre

Deusto industrial landmark crowned by Joaquín Lucarini's large concrete tiger above the former belt factory

El Tigre is one of Bilbao's stranger bits of skyline theatre: a former industrial building in Deusto with a huge concrete tiger crouched on the roof. The sculpture was commissioned in the 1940s for the Correas El Tigre belt factory, turning a company emblem into a neighbourhood landmark.

You do not need to make a special trip across town just for it, but it is worth noticing if you are near the Euskalduna area or walking the river. Bilbao is full of grand reinventions; El Tigre is more modest and more fun, a reminder that industrial heritage can be playful as well as monumental.
