Mount Santa Tecla

Galician hill above the Miño River mouth, with Atlantic views and an excavated Celtic castro settlement.

Mount Santa Tecla rises above the mouth of the Miño River at the very southwestern tip of Galicia, just outside the town of A Guarda. The summit offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints in northwestern Spain — on a clear day you can see south into Portugal, west across the Atlantic, and up the Galician coast.

Halfway up the mountain sits one of the most important Celtic castro settlements discovered in Galicia, dating from the first century BC. Excavated since 1913, the stone foundations of circular and oval dwellings have been partially restored, giving a vivid sense of how these hilltop communities were laid out. The on-site museum displays torques, bracelets, ceramics, and other objects found during excavations.

The drive or walk up from A Guarda takes about twenty minutes and is well signposted. There is a small chapel at the summit dedicated to Santa Tecla.
