Walking to Borås (Pinocchio Sculpture)

The official name is Walking to Borås. Locals just call it Pinocchio. It is a nine-metre bronze sculpture by the American pop artist Jim Dine, planted in the middle of Stora Torget in front of the town hall, depicting the famous puppet mid-stride. It is the most recognisable piece in the city's open-air sculpture collection and the unofficial centre of Borås.

Whether you find it charming, ridiculous, or magnificent depends on your taste. It has become, regardless, the photograph everyone takes. From the square you can walk the rest of the Borås sculpture route — works by Tony Cragg, Pierre Huyghe, Antony Gormley, Lars Vilks, and others — most of them within a 15-minute radius. Pick up a free map at the tourist office.

A story
When Jim Dine's nine-metre bronze Pinocchio was unveiled in 2008, local opinion was divided — to put it gently. A petition demanded its removal, the local press called it everything from a misunderstanding to an offence against the city's dignity. Two decades later it is the unofficial mascot of Borås, photographed daily by visitors and quietly loved even by some of the original objectors.
