Karlstad sits where the Klarälven splits into a delta and runs into Lake Vänern. It is the capital of Värmland, a practical regional city with a softer side: river walks, lake light, and a stubborn local pride in being sunnier than the rest of Sweden.
The best reason to stop is the cluster around Sandgrundsudden, where Sandgrund Lars Lerin and Värmlands Museum stand close to the river. Together they give Karlstad more cultural weight than its modest centre first suggests.
This is not Stockholm in miniature, and it is not trying to be. Treat Karlstad as a relaxed Värmland base: spend time at Mariebergsskogen, walk the Klarälven banks, then head east to Alsters herrgård for lake views and Gustaf Fröding's literary memory.
