Scuol is the main town of the Lower Engadine, set above the Inn River in Switzerland's far eastern Graubunden. It is a spa town, a ski base, and a Romansh-speaking village all at once, with painted Engadine houses, mineral springs, and mountains close enough to make the railway terminus feel like the start of the trail.
The town is less glamorous than St. Moritz and better for it. You come here for the Bogn Engiadina, for the old village lanes around the church, and for easy access to Motta Naluns above town. Tarasp Castle, across the valley, adds the postcard drama.
Scuol is a good Lower Engadine base in any season. Winter brings skiing and cross-country tracks; summer brings walking, mountain bikes, and a quieter side of Swiss Alpine life than the famous resorts farther up the valley.
