Meiringen is a mountain village in the Haslital, the upper Aare valley east of Interlaken. Several Alpine routes meet here, which once made it a market stop and now makes it a useful base for walks, trains, buses, and passes through the Bernese Oberland.
The town is best known for Reichenbach Falls, where Arthur Conan Doyle sent Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty over the edge in "The Final Problem". Meiringen has leaned into the connection with a small Sherlock Holmes Museum, but the landscape would be worth visiting without the literary murder attempt. The Aare Gorge, just east of town, cuts through limestone in a narrow walkway of water, cliffs, and shadow.
In winter, Meiringen-Hasliberg is a modest ski area rather than a high-altitude powerhouse. In summer, it is better: lifts, valley trains, walking paths, the gorge, and the high roads toward Grimsel and Susten passes all make the village a practical, unpretentious base.
