The Pâquis is the quarter immediately north of the main train station (Gare Cornavin), bounded by the lake to the east. It is Geneva's most international and mixed neighbourhood — a dense grid of streets packed with small restaurants, budget hotels, corner bars, and a persistent transactional sex trade that occupies a few specific blocks without dominating the whole area.
The diversity of the Pâquis makes it the best neighbourhood in Geneva for eating on a budget: Ethiopian, Lebanese, Sri Lankan, Turkish, Brazilian, and more, spread through the streets around rue de Berne and rue de Fribourg. The Bains des Pâquis at the lake end of the quarter is the neighbourhood's most-loved institution. For nightlife, the Pâquis has the highest density of bars in the city, ranging from dive bars to wine bars to the LGBTQ venues around the Quai du Seujet.
