The Grand Theatre

Geneva's neoclassical opera house on Place Neuve

Geneva's principal opera and ballet venue, the Grand Théâtre sits on Place Neuve alongside the Conservatoire and the Musée Rath. Built in 1879 in a neoclassical style clearly inspired by the Paris Opéra, it was gutted by fire in 1951 and rebuilt over the following decade. The current interior is more restrained than the original but acoustically excellent.

The season runs from September to June, with a mix of opera, ballet, and recitals. Tickets are more affordable than you might expect for a house of this calibre, and last-minute seats often turn up. Even if you're not attending a performance, the building's facade and the square it anchors are worth a look.
