Prättigau Valley

The Prättigau is the Alpine valley in which Klosters sits, running from the Rhine plain near Landquart up to the high plateau of Davos. It is one of the more traditional valley landscapes in Graubünden, with a string of small farming villages alongside the Landquart river, many of them architecturally intact and little visited.

Cycling and walking paths run the length of the valley, offering an alternative to the ski area and a chance to explore the smaller Walser communities upriver and downriver from Klosters. Several of the villages have local museums covering the Walser settlement history and the valley's agricultural past. The main road and railway follow the valley floor, making it easy to travel between villages without a car.

A story
The Prättigau — literally "meadow district" in the Romansh-rooted dialect — runs about 35 kilometres from Landquart up to the Davos plateau, lined with small villages that have retained their traditional Walser architecture. The valley was settled in the 13th and 14th centuries by Walser migrants from Valais, who brought distinctive construction techniques that you can still see in the older buildings around Klosters and Saas im Prättigau.
