Schwarzsee

The Schwarzsee is a small alpine lake at Laret, midway between Klosters and Davos at just over 1,500 metres altitude. It sits in a moorland hollow that is now a protected nature reserve, with bog vegetation, reed beds, and several species of waterfowl. In winter the lake freezes reliably and is used for natural-ice skating.

The footpath around the lake takes less than an hour and is manageable for all ages. From Klosters the lake is reached by a 20-minute drive or bike ride along the valley floor, following the Davos road through Laret. In midsummer the surrounding wetland flowers in yellows and whites, and the lake itself reflects the surrounding peaks on calm mornings.

A story
The Schwarzsee sits in a shallow glacial depression between Klosters and Davos at around 1,540 metres, flanked by silver fir forest. The dark peat-stained water that gave it the name "Black Lake" is in fact clean and swimmable in summer, and the surrounding bog is a protected habitat for rare alpine plants and birds.
