Klosters

Alpine Prättigau village of wooden chalets and royal ski history, linked to the Parsenn slopes.

Klosters is a small, unhurried alpine village in the Prättigau valley, 20 minutes from Davos but a world apart in character. While Davos has grown into a conference city, Klosters has stayed resolutely itself: a scatter of wooden chalets, church steeples, and flower-hung balconies backed by high peaks. The British royal family has been coming here for decades — Chalet Eugenia became famous through decades of royal visits — which says something about the place: quiet, tasteful, and thoroughly alpine.

The skiing connects via the Gotschnagrat into the Parsenn ski area, giving access to one of Switzerland's largest ski networks without the Davos crowds. The Madrisa area on the other side of the valley is quieter and good for families. In summer, the valley is excellent walking country, with trails through the Schlappin Valley and up onto high pastures. The Sunniberg Bridge spans the valley just west of the village — one of the most elegant highway bridges in the Alps — and the Schwarzsee lake at Laret makes a fine detour toward Davos.
