Art Museum of Prykarpattia

The regional art museum lives inside the old Collegiate Church of the Virgin Mary, the bulky red-brick building that closes off Sheptytsky Square. The church was built between 1672 and 1703 as the Potockis' Catholic family church, was secularised under the Soviets in the 1960s and turned into a museum.

The collection is properly good for a regional gallery: Galician icon painting from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, baroque sculpture from the suppressed Latin parishes, and a strong twentieth-century section covering Ukrainian modernists. The space itself — a tall, white-vaulted nave hung with paintings — is half the reason to visit.
