Yaremche is a small mountain town of about 8,800 people in western Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, sitting right at the entrance to the Carpathian National Park. It is the main base for exploring the Ukrainian Carpathians — a region of forested ridges, alpine meadows, and Hutsul mountain culture that feels a world away from Ukraine's flat steppe heartland.
The Prut river cuts through town in a scenic gorge, tumbling over rocks past an open-air market where locals sell carved wooden crafts, sheepskin vests, and Hutsul artwork. Trails lead straight out of town into the surrounding valleys and peaks, from easy riverside walks to full-day ridge hikes. In winter the area draws cross-country skiers, though facilities are modest compared to western European resorts.
