Zhytomyr is a regional capital about 150 km west of Kyiv, set in the wooded north of central Ukraine. It is an old city with Polish, Jewish, Russian imperial, and Ukrainian layers, but it rarely feels like a museum piece. It is a working provincial centre, with broad streets, churches, markets, and parks above the Teteriv River.
The city's most distinctive claim is space history. Sergei Korolyov, the rocket engineer behind the early Soviet space programme, was born here, and the astronautics museum built around that story is Zhytomyr's strongest sight.
Travel in Ukraine remains shaped by Russia's full-scale invasion, and plans need current security advice. Zhytomyr has been far from the main front lines, but missile and drone attacks can affect any Ukrainian city.
