Watson Fothergill Walk

A self-guided walk past the wildly eccentric Victorian buildings of Nottingham's most distinctive architect.

Watson Fothergill (1841–1928) designed about a hundred buildings in Nottingham, almost all of them instantly recognisable: a hyperactive mix of Gothic Revival, Old English and Flemish, with stripey brickwork, half-timbered gables and tile-hung turrets piled on with enormous self-confidence. His own small office on George Street, finished in 1894, is the most concentrated example.

A free, printable walking route on the city council website strings together ten or so of his best buildings — including the Express Building on Upper Parliament Street, the Norwich Union building on Smithy Row, and the former Black Boy Hotel (sadly demolished, but explained on the route). Allow an hour; bring an umbrella.
