Wolferton

Tiny Norfolk village on the Sandringham Estate, centred on a former royal railway station in secluded woodland

Wolferton is a tiny village on the western edge of Norfolk, about 3 miles from Sandringham House. It sits within the Sandringham Estate woodland, surrounded by stands of mature trees that give it an unexpectedly secluded feel.

The village is dominated by its former royal railway station, closed in the 1960s and now converted into private apartments. The station served the Royal Family on their journeys to and from Sandringham, and the platform buildings survive in good condition. The station is private, but the owners have traditionally been welcoming to visitors who wish to look around and photograph it.

Bus services connect Wolferton to King's Lynn and Hunstanton. Within a few miles you can also walk through Dersingham Bog, watch winter geese at the Snettisham RSPB reserve, or climb the Norman keep of Castle Rising.

Guide

Getting There

By car. Wolferton sits just off the A149 King's Lynn to Hunstanton road, about 8 miles north of King's Lynn. From the A149, follow signs through the woodland to the village. There is a small unpaved area where you can park near the old station.

By bus. The Coastliner 35 between King's Lynn and Hunstanton stops at the top of the village lane on the A149. From there it is a 15-minute walk down through the woods to the station.

By train. The nearest railway station is King's Lynn, with hourly trains from London King's Cross. From King's Lynn, take the bus, a taxi (around £15), or hire a bike for the flat run along the coast road.
