Wymondham is a small Norfolk market town southwest of Norwich, pronounced "Windham" and best approached at a walking pace. Its centre has the right old-East-Anglian ingredients: narrow streets, independent shops, timber-framed buildings, a market place, and an abbey whose twin towers dominate the low skyline.
The town was shaped by wool, monastic land, and a 1615 fire that cleared much of the medieval centre. That disaster left room for the stilted Market Cross, now the town's most distinctive small landmark, while Wymondham Abbey still gives the place its gravity.
Wymondham is not trying to compete with Norwich. It works better as a gentle half-day or day trip: abbey first, museum next, then tea or a pint near the market place, with a ride on the Mid-Norfolk Railway if the timetable lines up.
