Dereham is a central Norfolk market town, less polished than the coast and less obvious than Norwich. Its appeal is practical and historical: railways, farm life, a windmill, and a small museum in one of the town's oldest buildings.
The Mid-Norfolk Railway is the strongest draw, running heritage trains south toward Wymondham on selected days. Just outside town, Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse gives a much fuller look at rural Norfolk, with workhouse buildings, farm displays, and open grounds.
In the town itself, Bishop Bonner's Cottage Museum is a small local-history stop in a thatched building, and Dereham Windmill adds another easy landmark. Dereham is not a grand destination, but it rewards a spare day if you are already exploring inland Norfolk.
