The Opera House

The Opera House on Mount Pleasant opened in 1902 as a 1,100-seat theatre and was Tunbridge Wells' grand variety venue throughout the first half of the twentieth century. It declined into a bingo hall after the war and looked set for demolition before the pub chain Wetherspoon converted it in the 1990s — keeping almost all of the Edwardian baroque interior intact.

It is a slightly surreal experience: ordering a pint in the gilded stalls of a working theatre, with the auditorium ceiling painted with Greek muses above you. Worth a look-in even if you are not drinking.

A story
The Edwardian baroque interior — gilded boxes, painted ceiling, plush velvet seats — is preserved more or less intact, despite the fact that the building has been a Wetherspoon pub since 1997. The stage is the bar, the stalls are the dining area, and the dress circle is still where you go for a drink with a view.
