Combe Martin

Exmoor coastal village with a sheltered beach, long valley setting, and the unusual Pack o' Cards inn.

Combe Martin sits on Exmoor's far western coastal fringe, tucked into one of Devon's longest villages stretching along a narrow valley down to the sea. The coastal scenery is excellent, with dramatic cliffs and a sheltered sandy beach that makes for good swimming at low tide.

The village is best known for the Pack o' Cards inn, built at the beginning of the 18th century with winnings from gambling. It has 52 windows across four floors and 13 doors — the builder clearly had a theme in mind. Beyond the pub quiz trivia, Combe Martin makes a good base for walking the South West Coast Path, with the spectacular headland of the Great Hangman nearby.
