The George stands on Land of Green Ginger and dates back to the 1700s. Its main claim to fame is a tiny postcard-sized window beside the courtyard entrance, sometimes promoted as England's smallest window — once used by an ostler to keep an eye out for guests arriving by coach. The interior is wood-panelled and intimate, with a small snug and an upstairs dining room.
The pub is a regular stop on the Old Town pub crawl that takes in Ye Olde White Harte and the Olde Black Boy on High Street. Standard cask ales, a short menu of pub food, and a quiet courtyard at the back. Worth a stop even if just for the curious window.
