Ye Olde White Harte is reached through an alleyway off Silver Street that opens into a small courtyard. Inside, it is wood-panelled, low-ceilinged, and stacked with curiosities: cannonballs, swords, and an upstairs room called the Plotting Parlour, where, according to local legend, Hull's governor Sir John Hotham decided to refuse Charles I entry to the town in 1642 — the act that helped trigger the English Civil War.
The history is half-true at best (the building probably postdates 1642) but the pub is genuinely old, the courtyard is sheltered, and the cask ales are well kept. Sunday roasts are properly done. The skulls displayed inside are said to have been dug up from the cellar in the 19th century; nobody knows whose they were.
