Whitelock's Ale House

Address Turk's Head Yard, Leeds LS1 6HB

Leeds's oldest pub, tucked down a narrow alleyway off Briggate, Whitelock's has been serving beer since 1715. The Victorian bar fittings — copper bar tops, stained glass, ornate mirrors, and tiled walls — are largely original, and the long narrow room still operates much as it always has. It serves a rotating selection of well-kept real ales alongside straightforward pub food.

The pub was restored to its Victorian glory in the 1990s and has been Grade II listed since 2011. It is beloved by locals as one of the few remaining pubs in the city centre that has escaped both modernisation and the craft beer price premium, though the beer selection is good by any standard. Find the entrance through Turk's Head Yard, the alleyway just off Briggate between the Corn Exchange and the Victorian Quarter.
