Leeds is the principal city of northern England, a commercial and cultural centre that has reinvented itself from its industrial past into one of the most dynamic cities in the country. It sits at the crossroads where the main north-south and east-west motorways and railways meet, making it easy to reach from anywhere in Britain.
The city claims to be Britain's greenest, with more parkland per capita than any city except Vienna. Temple Newsam, at 1,000 acres, is one of Europe's largest urban parks, while Roundhay Park's 750 acres of lakes and woodland are a favourite with locals. The city centre has been transformed in recent decades with pedestrianised shopping streets, a thriving restaurant scene, and an energetic nightlife.
Leeds has two universities and a strong cultural infrastructure. The Royal Armouries Museum and the Thackray Museum of Medicine are both of international standing. Kirkstall Abbey, a ruined 12th-century Cistercian monastery in a park setting on the River Aire, is one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in England. The historic houses of Harewood House and Temple Newsam House are worth a half-day trip. The Leeds Corn Exchange and the Victorian Arcades showcase the city's remarkable Victorian commercial architecture. Four theatres including the Leeds City Varieties, a strong live music scene, and Leeds United at Elland Road round out the offerings.
