At 879 metres, Ben Ledi — "the hill of God" in Scottish Gaelic, though the etymology is disputed — is the defining peak of the southern Trossachs and the obvious objective for walkers staying in Callander. The standard ascent starts at the Stank Glen car park on the A821, follows the Stank Burn up through forestry, and then climbs open hillside to the broad summit ridge. In clear conditions the panorama is astonishing: Loch Lomond to the west, the Forth valley to the south, and rank after rank of Highland peaks beyond. Allow five to six hours for the round trip.
The hill is a Corbett (between 762m and 914m) rather than a Munro, which means it tends to be quieter than the famous Munros nearby. Good hiking boots and waterproofs are essential — the summit is above cloud more often than not.
