Rob Roy and Trossachs Visitor Centre

The visitor centre on Ancaster Square occupies the old St Kessog's Church and makes the best of its material: the story of Rob Roy MacGregor, the cattle drover, clan chief, blackmailer, and folk hero who became Scotland's answer to Robin Hood after Walter Scott got hold of him. The exhibition is honest about the ambiguity — Rob Roy's career involved a great deal of extortion alongside the more heroic episodes — and the Trossachs section puts the landscape in historical context. A good wet-weather stop, and useful for understanding why the whole region is so thoroughly branded around a man who died in 1734.
