Campbeltown

Remote Kintyre harbour town with whisky history, tidal-island walks, and a stubborn end-of-road character.

Campbeltown sits near the southern end of Kintyre, a long way from Glasgow by road even though the map makes it look close. That isolation is part of the appeal. You arrive past sea lochs, moorland, ferries, and small west-coast villages, then find a working harbour town that once sent whisky out by the shipload.

The old whisky boom still gives Campbeltown its identity. There were once dozens of distilleries here; now the surviving names, especially Springbank Distillery, make the town one of Scotland's smallest but most distinctive whisky regions. Campbeltown also has enough odd local texture to reward a day: the Art Nouveau Campbeltown Picture House, the social history at Campbeltown Heritage Centre, and the tidal walk to Davaar Island.

This is not a quick tick-box stop. Campbeltown is best if you are already touring Kintyre, Arran, or Argyll and want a place that feels like the road has genuinely run out.

Eating Out

Campbeltown is a harbour town, so seafood is the right instinct. Opening times can be seasonal and changeable, especially outside summer.
