Dirleton Castle is a ruined fortress-residence in the village of Dirleton, two miles west of North Berwick. Its oldest parts go back to the 13th century, but the pleasure of the visit is the mix: defensive towers, domestic ranges, later gardens, and a village setting that feels gentler than the castle's military history.
The gardens are a real part of the attraction, not just scenery around the walls. Allow time to wander them after the ruins, especially in summer when the herbaceous borders are at their best. It is easy to reach by bus, bike, or taxi from North Berwick and combines well with Yellowcraig or the coast road.
