Madras College

Andrew Bell's 'Madras system' school of 1834, on South Street

Address South Street

Madras College is the senior secondary school in St Andrews, established in 1832 by Andrew Bell — the Scottish clergyman whose 'Madras system' of pupil teaching had spread across British India. The original 1834 schoolhouse, fronting South Street between two Doric columns, is one of the finer pieces of Greek Revival architecture in Scotland.

Most of the school's teaching has moved to a larger modern campus on the edge of town, and the original building was renovated for academic use by the University. The exterior, the courtyard, and a fragment of the medieval Blackfriars Chapel in the courtyard can be seen from South Street without entering.
