The Scores is the cliff-top road running along the northern edge of St Andrews from the castle eastward, and walking it — or rather the path below it, following the shoreline — is one of the best things to do in the town on a clear day. The road passes the castle, several university buildings including the Wardlaw Museum, and the Royal and Ancient clubhouse, with the West Sands visible in the distance.
The path below The Scores hugs the base of the cliffs and the castle rock, connecting to the harbour path on the east side and to the Links on the west. It is a proper coastal walk — the sea is close, the rock formations interesting at low tide, and the views north across the bay substantial. On a windy day the spray reaches the path; on a calm summer evening it is one of the most pleasant walks in the East of Scotland.
Several of the university's most handsome buildings line The Scores, including the neo-Gothic United College building and the older Younger Hall, which is used for university concerts and graduation ceremonies. The road has a genteel, academic character that gives you a sense of the university town St Andrews has been for 600 years.
