Aberystwyth Castle

13th-century ruined castle on the seafront, free entry

The ruined remains of a 13th-century castle built by Edward I as part of his campaign to control Wales. The castle changed hands several times during the Welsh wars and was eventually slighted during the Civil War to prevent its use. What remains are the twin towers of the gatehouse and sections of the curtain wall, sitting right on the seafront with the sea on two sides. Free to enter, open at all times. The setting — between sea, promenade, and town — is atmospheric, especially at dusk.
