Dolphin Experience at UNEXSO

The Dolphin Experience at UNEXSO is the most popular single attraction in Freeport, and for many visitors the reason they came. Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that range freely in the open sea around Grand Bahama are trained to interact with humans at the UNEXSO facility on the Port Lucaya waterfront.

Non-swimmers can wade in the shallows with the dolphins. Snorkellers can swim alongside them in the open water just offshore. Scuba divers can join a full dive with the dolphins on the open reef — one of the more unusual dive experiences in the Caribbean. All levels of interaction are supervised by trainers, and the sessions are conducted at a relaxed pace. Booking in advance is strongly recommended; the programme fills up quickly and there are limited spaces per session.

A story
The programme launched in 1987 and was among the first of its kind anywhere in the world to allow non-divers to interact with dolphins in near-natural open-water conditions rather than a pool. The dolphins are Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that live in the open waters offshore but return voluntarily to the facility — they are not kept in tanks.
