Port Lucaya Marketplace

The commercial and social heart of the Lucaya tourist district, Port Lucaya Marketplace is a waterfront complex of shops, restaurants, bars, and a marina strung around a central square. It is where most visitors to Freeport spend their evenings — the atmosphere is lively but unhurried, with live music on the square most nights.

The straw market sells Bahamian crafts and souvenirs, ranging from mass-produced items to genuine local work — take your time to look through. The marina is the departure point for dive boats, snorkelling trips, fishing charters, and glass-bottom boat excursions. The beach at Lucaya is a short walk away. Count Basie Square, at the centre of the complex, hosts free live Junkanoo performances on weekend evenings.

A story
The marketplace was built in the 1980s on land reclaimed from mangroves, part of a development push that transformed the southern shore of Grand Bahama. Count Basie Square at its centre is named for the jazz bandleader, who had a connection to the island through its mid-century resort era.
