Christ Church Parish Church

The current church on this prominent hilltop site above Oistins is the fifth building to occupy the spot — its predecessors were destroyed by hurricanes and fire. The present structure dates from 1935 and is a sturdy coral-stone building typical of Barbadian ecclesiastical architecture. The attached churchyard is well-kept and worth a slow walk.

The real draw, though, is the Chase Vault, located in the cemetery grounds. Between 1812 and 1820, the sealed vault of the wealthy Chase family was opened four times and each time found to contain coffins that had apparently shifted position on their own — despite no evidence of flooding, tampering, or human entry. The mystery was investigated by the Governor of Barbados himself and was never solved. The coffins were eventually removed and the vault left open. It remains one of the most famous unsolved curiosities in Caribbean history.
