Elvi's Kitchen is San Pedro's most enduring restaurant and something of a local institution. It started, as the story goes, as a literal kitchen — Elvi Staines cooking for neighbours and fishermen out of her home. It has since grown into a proper restaurant but retains the atmosphere of home cooking: Belizean rice and beans, stewed chicken, conch fritters, and fresh seafood prepared simply and well.
The open-air wooden building and the long history make it worth visiting for the atmosphere alone, but the food is genuinely good. Order the whole fish if it is on offer that day. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable by San Pedro standards.
