Sylvan Lake

Central Alberta resort town on Sylvan Lake, known for its broad beach and waterfront strip.

Sylvan Lake is a resort town on the shores of Sylvan Lake, about 25 kilometres west of Red Deer in central Alberta. In summer it is one of the most popular beach destinations in the province — the lake is warm enough for swimming, the sandy beach is broad, and the main strip of waterfront restaurants and amusements has a lively, unpretentious holiday feel.

The town is busy with Albertan families in July and August and very quiet the rest of the year. The lake itself is large and good for water sports including sailing, waterskiing, and fishing for walleye and northern pike. The quieter north shore at Jarvis Bay Provincial Park is good for camping and paddling away from the resort crowds. For anyone driving between Calgary and Edmonton, Sylvan Lake makes a pleasant detour.

Things to Do

Sylvan Lake's appeal is simple: a warm, clean lake, a sandy beach, and the infrastructure (boat rentals, waterslide parks, waterfront restaurants) to enjoy it. The town is honest about what it is — a summer playground for Albertan families — and it does that job well.
