Sooke

Vancouver Island harbor town with rocky coast walks, river pools, and rainforest trails west of Victoria.

Sooke is a harbor town west of Victoria, useful as a base but strong enough for a day in its own right. It sits where southern Vancouver Island starts to feel rougher: rocky points, cold Pacific water, rainforest trails, and the road onward to Port Renfrew.

The town's anchors are natural rather than urban. East Sooke Regional Park has some of the best coastal hiking near Victoria. Sooke Potholes draws swimmers to clear river pools in summer. Whiffin Spit gives an easy harbor walk with seals, birds, and good weather-watching.

Sooke is not a polished resort town, and that helps. Come for walking shoes, tide air, and a looser edge than Victoria. A car makes the visit much easier, though buses can get you from Victoria to town and near some trailheads.
