Morrisburg is a small village on the St. Lawrence River in eastern Ontario, between Brockville and Cornwall. On its own it is quiet, but it sits beside one of Ontario's best living-history attractions and close to the strange legacy of the St. Lawrence Seaway, which flooded whole river communities in the 1950s.
Upper Canada Village is the clear reason to stop. It recreates rural English Canadian life in 1866 with moved and rebuilt heritage buildings, working mills, farms, tradespeople, and interpreters in period dress. Nearby Crysler's Farm adds War of 1812 history, while the Lost Villages story gives the riverfront a more modern and melancholy layer.
Morrisburg is easiest by car off Highway 401. It makes a good half-day or full-day break on the corridor between Ottawa, Kingston, Montréal, and the Thousand Islands.
