Known for decades as Future Bakery and now trading as Future Bistro, this cavernous café has been the Annex's student living room since long before the word "third place" existed. The draw is the cabinet of Eastern European cakes and pastries, hearty cheap plates of perogies and goulash, and bottomless coffee at tables you can occupy for hours.
It stays open late, fills with U of T students cramming or arguing, and spills onto a big Bloor Street patio in summer. Unfussy, slightly faded, and a genuine neighbourhood institution.
