Plains Bison Herd

Prince Albert National Park maintains one of Canada's few free-roaming plains bison herds, descended from animals reintroduced after the species was nearly exterminated in the nineteenth century. The herd ranges the open meadows in the southwestern corner of the park, near the Sturgeon River Plains area, and can sometimes be seen from the Narrows Road or at designated viewing sites.

These are large, wild animals — bulls weigh up to 900 kg — and Parks Canada asks visitors to maintain a significant distance. The best viewing is in the early morning and evening when the herd moves to graze. Ask at the Waskesiu visitor centre for current sighting reports; the herd's location shifts with the seasons.
