Albert Memorial Bridge

The Albert Memorial Bridge is an art deco structure across Wascana Creek in the Wascana Park area, notable mainly for the extraordinary claim attached to it: that it is the longest bridge over the shortest span of water in the world. The bridge's actual purpose is to carry Albert Street over the boggy margins of Wascana Creek; the water underneath it is barely wider than a car, but the bridge had to be built substantially longer because of the swampy ground on either side.

The bridge itself is attractive — the art deco details on the lamp standards and railings are well-executed — and it sits in a good walking area within Wascana Park. Atlas Obscura has catalogued it as one of Regina's curiosities, which is fair: the combination of a genuinely handsome bridge and the most comically understated record claim in civil engineering is worth a detour. It is within easy walking distance of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and the MacKenzie Art Gallery.

A story
The Albert Memorial Bridge claims the title of the longest bridge over the shortest span of water in the world. The art deco structure crosses Wascana Creek at a point where the water beneath it is about 6 metres wide, but the bridge itself spans 60 metres — the disproportion is due to the marshy ground on either side requiring the road to be elevated considerably beyond the actual watercourse. Whether the claim is official or merely civic boasting is unclear, but it is delightfully absurd.
