Victoria Park

Victoria Park is the small formal park at the centre of downtown Regina, surrounded by the Hotel Saskatchewan, the downtown commercial strip, and the Knox-Metropolitan United Church. The park is nothing spectacular by urban park standards — a few hectares of grass, some mature trees, a fountain, and benches — but it functions as the city's communal living room in a way that larger parks cannot.

In summer the park hosts the Mosaic Festival of Multicultural Foods, outdoor concerts, and various civic events. The Hotel Saskatchewan on the south side of the park is worth admiring architecturally — a 1927 CPR Château-style hotel whose recent renovation restored the original proportions and materials. The building anchors the park corner with the kind of comfortable solidity that good early 20th-century hotel architecture reliably produced. The park is also the reference point for downtown navigation: most of central Regina is within a ten-minute walk.

A story
Victoria Park has been the civic heart of downtown Regina since the 1880s, and it is where the city gathers for events that range from summer concerts to political protests. The 1912 cyclone — a tornado that killed 28 people and destroyed 2,500 buildings in under three minutes — levelled much of the neighbourhood around the park; the rebuilt city emerged with new ambitions, and many of the buildings around the park date from the immediate post-cyclone reconstruction.
