Reginald the Grasshopper

Reginald the Grasshopper is a large fiberglass sculpture of a grasshopper installed in downtown Regina that has become one of the city's unofficial mascots. The grasshopper arrived without formal planning permission and has been there long enough to acquire a sort of squatter's legitimacy — the city has neither blessed nor removed it, and locals have adopted it as a point of pride.

The reference to grasshoppers is not accidental: Saskatchewan's history includes multiple devastating grasshopper and locust infestations, with the 1930s plagues being among the worst, stripping crops across millions of acres at the height of the Depression and drought. Reginald transforms the object of catastrophe into a civic mascot, which is one of the more Canadian ways of handling historical trauma. He is somewhere in the downtown core — part of the fun is finding exactly where, as his location has shifted over time.

A story
Reginald the Grasshopper is an unofficial public sculpture — a large fiberglass grasshopper installed in downtown Regina without permission from the city and subsequently adopted as a public curiosity rather than removed. The grasshopper references Saskatchewan's complicated relationship with the insect: the locust and grasshopper plagues of the 1930s Dust Bowl were among the most economically devastating events in the province's history, stripping crops across millions of acres of farmland at the same time as drought was already pushing families off the land.
